I am a long time listener from Australia and have enjoyed your enthusiasm, music and role playing advice. However, I was very upset by your so called humor concerning gang rape and 9 out of 10 enjoying it. There is nothing funny about rape, an assault that degrades and crushes the human spirit. Your humor is often off color and not for everyone, and for the most part I myself enjoy it. This time I did not, it was one step too far and highly offensive. I immediately stopped listening and have not listened since. I have begun to listen to your show again and hope you will consider my comment and give you pause, in that what you say can cause harm and effect others.

All the best

I think I posted this recommendation up as "potential topics" for future episodes, but your reviews of different RPG systems is very enlightening. That post on Traveller was awesome and the follow up podcast was just great. There are some many systems out there that most of the listenership has obviously not experienced based the results of the survey.

Other than that, the results of the survey weren't really surprising, but interesting none the less. As always, great job guys.

Heya, sounds like you guys had a great time! Just some quick thoughts to share.

Creating a pared down list of advantages, disadvantages, and skills is a *huge* help for players feeling overwhelmed when making characters. There's a great tool for this at http://www.sjgames.com/gameaids/gurps/sorter/ , lets you go through the trait master lists and mark each trait's availability/desirability to make custom lists.

Also, templates. It's a bit more work for the GM, but having some pre-made templates (Chapters 7 and 15 in the Basic Set) for players to look at can help them see what sorts of things "should" go with certain character types, even if they don't use the actual templates (and if they do, bam, character's done, time to get to the game!).

As for GCA and 'too much info', if you want to fiddle around a bit, you can make a custom data file for your game, that would include *only* those traits allowed in the current game. No more scrolling through 'Doesn't Breathe' or 'Extra Limbs' for Old West characters, they simply wouldn't be on the list.

The GURPS GM screen is great, but I eventually made my own as well. Took some work, but the results were well worth it! It has nothing on it that I didn't put there, really speeds things up.

Anyway, hope some of that's helpful. Looking forward to Part 2!

Claire and Bruce were sharing a mic that had an issue. I troubleshot it, and it appeared that it wasn't recording the distortion, so we went ahead and recorded. I was wrong. It DID record the distortion. After the fact, I discovered that the one part of the signal chain I didn't check (a patch cord) was the culprit. It has since been fixed, and (knock on wood) won't happen again.

Stouchebag, Douchebags and the very lovely ladies (Claire and Kimi are tied for my affections), thank you so much for putting out a quality podcast that mixes the best part of the hobby (read: fun) with some real insight into improving games. Finding both you, and Fear the Boot, have inspired me to finally get past my procrastination and actually work on a world to set some players in. I've already come up with a lot, including a timeline in which the power of faith magic and arcane magic don't exist together but rather in inverse. I'll be using Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 but with some tweaks to make things interesting and if my players and I pull it off correctly, it will come out something like Prince Caspian (if the human side had arcane magic and the narnians had divine magic).

As a listener from the day episode 2 of season 1 came out, I have always been in love with your podcast. Easily, the most entertaining one out there. Though I love reading the emails in voices and reading the whole things, maybe summarizing the emails would condense the time it takes to plow through them. Although, there is something to be said about the reading of the emails in voices, because we get awesome quotes like, "Fanboy Pen!s" and other such treasures.

My suggestion would be the following. Read through the emails you receive for the week. Select a couple to read and discuss as they pertain to the topic at hand. The remainder, you can either post on the forum to answer, or have the sender post on the forum, and the hosts can respond to the questions contained in the email. This will provide feedback for all, keep your show times reasonable, and allow you to store the old emails (on the forum) - allowing you to bring them back if the topic is right for the show.

Just my 2 copppers.

Thanks douches, for your witty banter and dedication to the most entertaining RPG podcast around.

you might want to ask Gateway if you can get 1 of the seminar rooms to do the pod cast in
northern is starting a week later than normal(so labor day is NOT dress rehersal weekend)
So I might be able make it to Gateway

I would suggest you run it as a midnight thing on either Saturday or Sunday night

Regarding the Masterplan legal issue:

I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that the way the DDI integration feature worked was such that it allowed people who had DDI accounts to share all of the data within DDI with users that had no DDI account. Essentially, the DDI integreation feature would extract all of the data in DDI and store it locally in a set of XML files. These files could then be shared with other Masterplan users who could import the XML data into Masterplan without ever logging in to DDI.

Of course, I could be wrong. I often am.

Hi Guys,
What can I say about the podcasts except that they are fricken wicked!!!
Never have I heard such douchiness of this high calibre since the halycon days of when i first got into RPGing in 1983.
I am just at the moment speeding my way through the podcasts and have to admit love the chat, love the drinking and love the feel you guys have nailed it like a fifty dollar hooker! (last reference for Tappy)
I have been gaming on and off for over 25 years and to be honest class my self as a purest and don't really play D&D since starting on basic back in the day!
I normally play rolemaster, Traveller, Cthulhu and the Runequest 2.
I love playing and unfortunately I do GM as well.
I have witnessed some truly excellent GMing so therefore a bit reserved about my own abilities but to date no player complaints apart from when I stopped a player from rezzing his Duck character in Runequest 2 by having a NPC decapitate him and make him into a pillow!!!
I just wanted to bring to your attention one of the best hooks I have ever witnessed in a game. The party was travelling along a quite desolate shoreline when we discovered a bottle with a message in it, box standard I here you say but my character being an inquisitive halfling opened the bottle and read the message which asked for the finder to launch a rescue. The reward being... Get this the antidote to the contact poison that the note was covered in!!!
Whilst reading the note another party member asked me what it said so I informed him that he had better see for himself and passed him the note. This carried on until everyone had read it and only after the note went to the last member did everyone fall around laughing calling eath other bastards and such.
Will keep listening to the casts and will hopefully be up to date soon
Keep up the good work

Loved the podcast, I must say, it's nice to see just you two doing the podcast. Loved the examples of descriptions from your sessions, keep them coming. Great descriptions are hard to do,especially improvising, it takes some time to get the hang of it, in my opinion. Reading great fantasy literature may help, but in the heat of an RPG session, it is hard to come up with a clever description sometimes.

Pathfinder has a living campaign. A very successful one.

RPGA is awesome, I play a lot of it. I have home games and I love public RPGA. The key is that it is very casual. You can show up and play or not. And really you'll tend to get the same groups to show up.

There is also the 'my realms' adventures where the GM makes up their own RPGA adventure.

Finally it's really awesome to get exposure to so many different GM's and players mixing and matching and learning from each other while they run games back to back.

You can absolutely run off the rails... not in rewards... but the game play. I often run away from them. For instance I had a play that was supposed to investigate a drug smuggling ring. He went out and bought a drug factory, he had the money. From that point on the module is out the window.

Love the podcast.

And I think it's funny that someone would point out an article telling someone else how they played their own game back in the day. There were a lot of different ways and means and home rules. There wasn't ONE TRUE WAY.

I would argue that the class Druid wasn't meant to simulate Shannara's Druid. There are other in game options if you need the mechanics in combat to fit Shannara's druid. First I'd consider multiclassing or a hybrid. Or, if your up to this level of role playing, even picking a fighter straight up and re-skinning.

See, this is why I hate 4E. When I hear guys defend it by saying, "well your class isn't supposed to fight because that's not it's 'role' ", I wonder how many great fantasy stories have been nerfed by this kind of mechanic. Then, in the very next breath, you tell us that we can "role"-play however we want even when there are no "rules" telling us how to role-play. By excluding Druids as fighters, are you not telling us how we are supposed to play based on in-game mechanics??

Based on the druid example, you're saying that I cannot play a druid like "Walker Boh" or "Alannon" from Shannara. More than any other writer, I think Terry Brooks has had the largest impact on the modern fantastical definition of "the druid" in his myriad of Shannara novels. They were more than capable of holding their own in combat, going on solo adventures all the time. What about Gandalf? Did he always need a "group" to travel Middle-earth for hundreds of years? Did he need a group to defeat the Balrog? What about Pug from Feist's "Magician"? Did he need a group or a "role" to do combat at every turn? I could imagine that there are hundreds and hundreds of examples where a specific character did not need a "group" or a "role" to be successful in their class.

See this is the crux of what I'm getting at. 4E is a tactical, "group" game, designed for players to be pigeon-holed into certain niches and roles. Based on these rules, I am being told I cannot necessarily play a character how "I" would like to play him. The point is, is that the spirit of 4E takes us away from over 60 years of Swords & Sorcery tradition (including earlier versions of D&D) and shoves us into a tactical war-game setting.

The other thing I have to say is that so many people love to use the "roll"-play vs "role"-play argument (or gaming vs role-playing), using the former to describe players who do NOT like to role-play (by definition) because they use stats and dice to play. This line from the podcast made me cringe because how wrong it is: "Good role-players don't necessarily need those mechanical advantages". No, that's completely false!!!!

Let me explain why this is so backwords: By stepping outside of the stats and dice that your character was assigned upon creation, you are stepping outside of your character's role and into the "Out-Of-Character" role of you as a player. In other words, you are role-playing less by not using the stats and mechanics your character was given and interjecting your OWN real-world instinct and experience to overcome game encounters.

Every time you use your character's skills to overcome encounters, you are role-playing. Every time you use the player's brain to overcome encounters, you are not role-playing, you are meta-gaming. Roll-playing = Role-playing, it's as simple as that.

Now I'm not saying that letting the player think some things out on his own is a bad thing, but let's not call it "role-playing" because we are doing precisely the opposite.

Finally, I had to chuckle at those players referenced in the podcast who say that in the "old-school" game, they used persuasion rolls instead of their own player skill to persuade an NPC. I would direct you to Matthew Finch's, "A Quick Primer For Old School Gaming", as he would argue the complete opposite was true in the old school game.

I would direct you to Matthew Finch’s, “A Quick Primer For Old School Gaming”, as he would argue the complete opposite was true in the old school game.

Hey, gang. I just recently caught up to this episode, noticing the link and mentioning of The Dice of Life. First, I want to be clear that we spoke no ill of your podcast. In fact, despite my enjoying your podcast, I haven't mentioned your podcast at all. (Perhaps though I should!)

However, your podcast is among the list of blogs and podcasts on our blogroll in the sidebar and has been for a while. I suspect that readers had been clicking on that link to your site either because of an interesting episode title at the time or because they mistook it for Smiling Jack's Bar and Grill.

In any case, I'm glad you got the traffic; you deserve it. Keep the fun going, gang. I'm definitely enjoying your show, and I look forward to more episodes.

Hey there, just some info on your 'free will' discussion. The questioner was Aron Head http://ideologyofmadness.spookyouthouse.com//archives/11649 here's his blog describing the situation. And the GM was Ross Peyton of RPPR. It was a con game, so there's no gaming history nor is there sufficient grounds to say if the other players were good/bad/otherwise.

He (Aron) heard your comments and responded: http://ideologyofmadness.spookyouthouse.com//archives/11764.

It seems odd to me that he starts out saying that he wanted to roll to get the DM to advocate for him. "You make a good argument." style. But then at the follow up post, his solution (in a Savage Worlds game) Would be to make the persuadee spend a bennie to not get persuaded, or get a bennie to be persuaded. This is a clear case of the carrot and the stick for the persuadee. I don't know what I think about it. I think the target number for that would have to be the max(4, persuadee's applicable attribute/skill of choice) examples: their persuade, intimidate, smarts, spirit - pretty much whatever they can make a case for that's just short of physical force. And I think that should only be if the persuadee agrees to the contest.

Actually, I think that is better, the persuader and persuadee can agree to terms. If I win => this, if you win => that. If neither of them succeed, tough, it's back to player land not character land. If they don't agree to terms, then no rolls. Having an undefined result hingeing on this "persuade" roll is too loose. You know what happens if you hit someone with your katana of douchebaggery, you need to decide (ahead of time) what happens if you win your 'contested' persuasion roll. And don't be surprised if you 'persuade' the big brawny guy to go and do X, that he then 'intimidates' you into doing Y.

But you really shouldn't be surprised if that player just wants nothing to do with your douchebaggy self.

Hey douchebags, I just started listening to your podcast. I'm only half way through season one and you've already brought back many fine memories of douchebagery of old. We are, how shall I say... of the same era... I'll be caught up to the current cast in a few weeks... keep them coming... Right now I'm being held prisoner of war in Tupelo, MS where they still think DnD is the work of the Devil... thanks for keeping me sane! =D

Hey, if a player told me they want to tie a giant's shoelaces together, I wouldn't go ask a book if I had permission to let them, I'd just think to myself, "Actually, I was totally imagining this giant with sandles. I mean, shoelaces would have to be anchor chains from the titanic, which you would have no way of dragging much less tying together... but I like where you're going with this.", but what I actually say is, "You do it. He fails flat on his face and *WHOOF*... he gets the wind knocked out of him. ...which blows you off your feet. While you're in the air you think, "Maybe I should have thought this trough a bit longer." Then you land on your ass. You take 1 point of damage to your tailbone and won't be able to sit for two days. ...and you're sitting right next to a giant eyeball which is looking right at you. Run for your life." Rolls do not matter, rules do not matter, any book which tells me how I MUST do things MUST be torn apart and thrown in the garbage; the only thing that matters is...

What do my players want and how do I have fun giving it to them? :)

I realize I'm commenting on an episode several episode's old. but I think this is a the episode where the idea popped into my head. If I'm wrong, oh well, deal with it d-bags.
Anywho, you mentioned in an episode about nazi goblins . . . and as cool of a concept that is for enemies, it's not a new one. There is a song that is floating around the rpg podosphere called (and I kid you not) "Nazi Zombie Bugbears".
I did not create this song, but I think that if you can get a copy of it you should put it on the end of one of your shows. Sadly, I'm not sure where to go to find a copy of the song. I know it was released on the podcast feed for the show "Fear the Boot", but I'm not sure how many episodes back (a year, year and a half maybe), or how far back they archive their ep's.
Anyway, just thought I'd give ya an FYI about the song, I be you'd think it Hilarious.

Veronica, of "Smiling Jacks Bar and Grill" Annoys Me. She Annoys me on "The Game's the Thing" just as much. Ron annoys me to a degree as well—but not as much as his wife. However, I find myself continually listening to their shows because despite their annoying personalities—they have good content about Savage Worlds (interviews, inside information, and news).

I think your criticism of savage worlds investigation was rather "savage", while investigation is in fact only research, streetwise is not just carousing, it is the questioning and investigation of people on the streets. Notice is a compression skill of some systems, it covers, search, hear, and other general investigation. The system is meant to be fast and loose, skills are meant to be interchangeable, one could use interrogation on a street character but I would ask people to roll to see if they would know where a likely street character might live.

Great episode guys! And thanks for the youtube link. We love seeing other gamers in the Youtube world supporting their craft. We have our own (http://www.youtube.com/quiltcityogres) channel, but I'd say its not nearly as good as basically any other gaming-centric youtube channel. Maybe more booze, though.

Your idea for the Child to adult game sounds a lot like the book/movie "IT" by Steven King.
I would love to play a game like that. Wether in the Grim game or many others.
I used to love playing changeling as a standalone campaign without the rest of the WoD.

Folks - Great episode. I'm a relatively new listener, so I was surprised and honored to find that we were mentioned in this episode.

See, my name is David Nett, and I'm the creator of GOLD (I also play Jon, the injured American team captain). We're hard at work on more content for the series, and the support of the gaming community is paramount for us. I really appreciate you taking the time to mention us.

For reference, you can find us at : http://goldtheseries.com &
facebook: http://facebook.com/goldtheseries

(the longer URL you mentioned in the 'cast is because we're piggybacking on another generous site to save $$ ;-)

PS: There Will Be Brawl is brilliant. Just that opening scene of the first episode with Luigi walking the gritty streets of the mushroom kingdom with his noir voiceover - genius.

[...] Episode 8 of Happy Jack’s Podcast (one of my favorite RPG podcasts) discusses the idea of character death at great length within the context of multiple systems. I highly recommend this podcast to any role-player, and I hope that those who enjoyed my brief notes on character death enjoy the latest episode of Happy Jack’s. It’s a great listen for game masters and players alike. I really like their discussion regarding the availability of “resurrection” magic in the 4th Edition game, and I’m in agreement with the hosts that character death should be the result of a series of poor decisions (as opposed to one or two rolls of the dice).
Great show so far! I'm really glad that I noticed it on the iTunes.

I've got two comments about what you discussed this episode:

1) If you are looking for cheaper D&D minis, take a look at eBay. You can sometimes get some great deals from people selling off big lots of figs - they may not be exactly what you want, and you may get some extra crap included, but you will be getting more for your money. There are some figs which go for a premium, but you can avoid those.

2) One thing to always remember while running complex games is that sometimes the players come up with plans that are way better than what you've got... don't be afraid to jettison parts of your plans if they come up with a great idea during one of their brainstorming sessions on what to do next. You don't want to use exactly what they give you, but take it and give it a little tweak... you can always claim that it was part of your plans the entire time.

Keep up the good work.

I do something similar. I list the monster name and a number if multiple ones appear in the encounter. Then, I make little bubbles (using a capital 'O') in groups of 5 with the '|' indicating where they are bloodied. I also list any non-at-will powers along with bubbles to mark off to indicate they are used. I leave space on the right to note any conditions they have.

So a monster listing might be:

Goblin Thug 1:
OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO|
OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO
Head Bash O (encounter)
Anger Strike O (recharge 5)
Goblin Thug 2:
....

Might have to try the color-coding next time.

Great, I was wanting to do this myself but did not know how to start. One suggestion. Place the name on the player side lower, so you can place a smaller simular sized paper over it to indicate conditions.
